OK, just fixed up an LT 250r and it is running decent but the powerband is not there. I ran it all day and the temp was 32F-40F.
Stock jets are 190 and the guy I bought it from has 200 in it. I am also running 20:1 mix as per the manual. All day I kept turning out the air/fuel mixture screw and it kept getting better. I am not at about a 1-1/2 turn out (manual claims 3/4 is right) and it is running the best is has but it still bogs when the powerband should kick in. Stock pipe and airfilter.

I am thinking about 32:1 and a stock 190 jet or 200. What do you guys thing? There is nothing else to adjust.

first off your drownin the thing in oil. i run mine at 40to1 . i also run aviation fuel. always use a good premix. also you gotta jet the thing to run at 40 to 1.have you done any other mods or what has been done to it. also check to make sure your throttle is opening completly. could be a bad cable? any way just dump in some 40 to 1 and then run it for a few then check your plug to make sure your not running to lean and if you are change your jetting. beleve it or not i rebuilt my motor added a pipe and a clamp on k/n all without rejetting my carb... it runs like a raped ape...

 

The stock jets for a LT250 is not 190
There is a reason that you have a 200 jet, because the 85 came stock with a 200. Straight out of the manual. Don't just throw a random jet in the carb, jet it according to how it needs it. I suggest finding someone who knows how to jet a carb and have them help you.

Also, I run 32:1 using maxima 927. Runs great.

 

How does your filter look?

 

Thanks for the feedback. Stock pipe and muffler and I made a typo. I have a 220 jet in it.
Air filter is stock, it was clean and I messaged a little 10/30 oil in it.
I have a brand new Uni filter to put in but I wasn't sure if I should run it in the winter or not.

I agree, the quad seems to be drowning in oil. I am going to try 32:1 with the Uni filter. I bet that solves it.

Also, it seems to pop into neutral sometimes when running in fifth. Tough fix?

I'll double check the travel of the throttle cable but I'm pretty sure its OK.

I can't believe how dirty ya get on these things as compared to the full fendered 4x4's. Lots of fun though. I just
need the power to be there so I can play with pulling the front wheels.

Get a pipe for it and youll notice more power.

 

Also remember that the 85-86 quadracers had no powervalves. The powercurve may be a little flatter than most newer stuff. Dunno if your used to a MX bike or something, just food for though I s'pose.

 

Adjusting your oil ratio will affect your air/fuel ratio. Test it at 32:1 before you start changing the jetting. 85's have a 32mm carb as compared to a 34mm for the 86, so you might be flowing too much fuel with the 220 main but at 40 degrees you might be OK so you're going to have to play with it.

 

Sounds like your reeds are bad. Mine done the same thing.

 

No reeds in an 85. I think the 220 jet is fine for this temp. I'll put the air/fuel screw back to 3/4 turn out when I try the 32:1 and start from there.
