87's were the first year and only had 6 head studs and blew gaskets quite often, and had a bigger reed cage and only FMF makes a replacement. But the big reed cage dumped to much gas out the exhaust so they had to change it to keep the EPA happy. And as long as you keep the head studs torqued, the gaskets rarely cause problems. 88-90 had 7 studs and a smaller reed valve, and more companies make them.
It's still the fastest stock ATV ever produced. I read on here some could hit almost 100mph right from the factory, but don't know if its true or not. They put out 51 hp stock, and with a powervalve they have great low-end grunt and pull hard to the top of the RPM range. My 87 isn't anywhere near stock, and I have yet to find any competition for it, either.
I paid $1500 for mine, and it was JUNK!! I had to replace all the susp., wheel, and axle bearings, shocks, plastic, seat cover, wheels and rims, clutch, brakes, fix the wiring, throttle, coil bracket (was taped to the frame), exhaust, skid plates, chain and sprockets, reed valve, head gasket, bore it out another .20 ( to .80 over), and a bunch of cleaning and repainting. Much to my surprise, though when I took the clutch cover off all the gears where brand spankin NEW!! I finally got some reciepts awhile later and the guy that had it BEFORE the guy I got it from had the entire bottom end done. The mass of the big 500's rotating assembly eggs out the cases on the ends of the crank, so grab the stator and check for ANY play....You want NONE!!! Decent ones probably go for around $2500-$3500. Much to my dismay, the Kelley Blue Book lists a good LT 500 at $1010.
Oh, the upper A-arms are a more squared on the 87s, and are mounted with one long tube attached to both arm ends. 88-90 had seperate mounting brackets for the uppers.....That's about it.....Latah
