silencer repack..
#1
I am new to the forum today and this is already my second post. Anyway I bought an answer silencer for 12.50 off of ebay today. It says it needs to be repacked. I have no idea how to do this but I saw repack kit for like less than $10 around the web. Is it easy to do? Any hints? By the way it's for a '87 lt250r.....thanks.........scotty

Welcome to the Forums Scotty,
It's no big deal to repack a silencer... in fact, it's basic routine maintainance! (Most commonly neglected)
Power can be lost from a silencer that is in need of repacking.
Basically you disassemble the silencer, and replace the fiber material, and put it back together... It's really a no-brainer. Pack the stuff in as tight as you can get it... you'll be fine
Good luck

Just go to your local shop to get silencer packing. It is only $5-$7. The web is ripping you. Also, make sure you really clean the inside good, and unlike duneaddict said, DONT pack it as tight as you can. The stuff should be snug, but not just crammed in there. Instructions come with the packing. Its basically just a square sheet of material that you wrap around the core, trim it to size, then you slip it back in.

I will agree to disagree with you on this one slacker. a Loose packing job will blow out quicker, and cause a performance decrease as soon as degredation begins.
A nice firm pack job shows performance improvements on the dyno. Thats whats worked best for me.
Perhaps I didn't word things correctly. I pack my silencers firmly (As tight as I can get them) which might not mean the same thing to somone else. Certainly not loose by any means.
I've tried many different ways of doing this, with varied results.
Please keep in mind... This is merely my $.02 worth

When it comes to jetting, I will tell you the same thing I tell everyone, look at the plug. We can't help you there. Probably wont have to, but you never know. Silencers dont make that much of a difference
