displacment is a combination of your stroke x your bore... stroke being your rod and bore being the width of your piston. put the 2 together and you have any given motors displacment.

# of cylinders x 0.7854 x bore x bore x stroke will give you your displacement, FYI

Or 1/2 bore x 3.14 x stroke x number of cylinders, I think.... it been a while.

The horsepower a given gas engine can produce is loosely related to its displacement but there are a number of other factors. A Briggs of 305 cc is not a highly stressed motor. It is made to generate its 5 horse all day long at full throttle and not blow up or even get overheated. Ever see those dyno tests of hot turboed cars? They rev it to peak power for just an instant. If they tried sustained full throttle operation they'd melt down and throw pistons through the roof. The're highly stressed.
The science of engine dynamics gets very involved. The motor of your quad comes from the factory set up to meet the needs of the average cross section of buyers, not just the speed freaks, and it is made in a mild enough state of tune so as not to break parts during the warranty period when driven to predictable stresses by the typical owner. So within the window of safety margin that allows, you can soup it up to a given degree, maybe 20-30 % more output and still have a reliable motor. After that you can make it hotter, but don't go far away from home on it without a friend with a rope.

Say we have two 500 vinsons. My friends is stock, but I put a k&n air filter, jet kit, cam, hmf pipe. They have the same cc's but mine is putting out a lot more horsepower. I could even put nitrous on mine to give it more horsepower, but like Glenlivet said, don't go far from home. The more you modify your engine, the shorter it's life will be.

Has nothing to do with CC's, I have a WR426F with over 50HP, and a Kawasaki KLR650 with only about 36HP. Its all in the internal components, ie valves, compression, carb etc.

Huh, a mower engine isnt much bigger than a weed whacker? Man, you are nuts dude! You must either have a little mower or a huge weed wacker!

Fill a large container full of water, then mark the water level. Now submerge the pony and see how much water is displaced, of course, you will need to fill the inside of the pony with water, so hold it under till its lungs fill with water to get a more accurate measument. Measure the rise in the water level in cubic centimeters to get actual CC's for the pony.
