230s engine help!!!!!
OK guys I am not new to engines by any means, but I need some ideas!!!!!! Bought a quad that would idle ONLY with the choke on so I did the following: Rebuilt the carb (it was missing o-rings all over!) , set it to the propper specs, Fuel supply is good, stark is good, compression is WAY TOO MUCH!!!!!( by my foot! ) The timing (electrical) is not setable, Mechanical timing is weird, It is like it is 1/2 tooth off, I have even changed it just incase, and it is right in-between????????? Cam chain is good and the tensioner is working.
Now when it finally starts!!!! (50-60 kicks) it shoots back-fire flames about 6" out of the muffler!!!, AND while you are kicking it it seems to blow a little fuel BACK OUT of the carb????????????? and it runs very rough for about 20 seconds and dies???????
This is the oddest thing I have ever seen, through some ideas at me PLEASE!!!!

tughillterror.... I have not had the air filter or the air tube on the carb yet.
TomM...yes I have and totally agree with you, that is what I thought, but according to the book it is correct, even had my riding bud come over and check it too!

the biggest thing I don't understand is the outragus compression! it kicks over good w/ the compression release, but to kick it over with out the release is just STUPID brutal! I have a fresh 10.5 in my 200x and it can not hold a candle to this mule! I am 6'4" so I have plenty of leverage. I even tightened both valves to NO slack and the damb thing is still hard as heck!???? About 6 kicks and you are done for awhile, I had a team of 3 people trying this thing, I am getting pissed!

this might sound stupid but does that thing have a flywheel and woodruff key on the crank ? if it does pull fly wheel and look at key coulda sheered it. i sheered mine and i have cdi timing and broke my leg to kick it and backfired ran then stalled . ok just ignore this if your 230 doesnt have that setup as i own lt250s . good luck

Have you ever kicked it over with the key off? If so, how did it feel? Still seem like big time compression? Did somone shave the head big time on this thing?
If it does, I'm out of ideas. If not, let us know, I have an idea.
One more question. Why do you think that it is 1/2 tooth off? Do you think you have the cam 1/2 tooth advanced or retarded?
