i need help adjusting a chain what bolts do i loosen it adjust it? I have a clymner manual but,it doesn't
show the setup i have.

There is a pivot bolt at the top of the swingarm. Then at the bottom of the swingarm, there should be 2 shorter bolts that tighten the axle in place, loosen these too. There should also be two small bolts that point straight out the back which pull the axle backwards to tighten the chain. Use these to pull the axle back. Make sure you leave about 1/2-5/8" of up and down movement in the chain (I think that was the recommended play). Also, make sure you turn each of the smaller screws the same amount so your axle stays square with the machine. Re-tighten everything.

 

The 230 is supposed to have 1.5-1.8 inches of chain travel at the center. Any less and you will at best snap a chain.

 

there are 2 different swingarm types which one do you have?

 

Being an 88 he would have the oval style carrier, not the round style used in 85-86.
