quadzilla vs yfz450

YFZs hook up real good in the dirt but are not really that powerfull.
My 91LT250 with a Quadzilla carb K+N filter and FMF pipe lost by one quad length to a stock YZF with a 50lb+ smaller rider in soft dirt. He wouldn't run anyone on pavement.

The YFZ is pretty quick... Stock 500's are not all that strong, and depending on your porting and pipe combo... you might just get your butt handed to ya... I saw some YFZ's that respond very well to a pipe and airbox mods.... a little alky doesn't hurt either..

I have a ported, piped, "carbed", “reeded” quadzilla as well as a YFZ 450. The 450 has the airbox lid removed, the carb rejetted, and the stock exhaust modified. As long as the race is on pavement, there is no comparison. My Quadzilla blows the helium-filled doors off the 450. My 500 has a higher-than-stock gearing of 13/38 but I still start off in 2nd.
Instructions:
1) Race on a paved surface.
2) Shift into 2nd gear.
3) Bring the revs up to 1/2 - 3/4 throttle just before take-off.
4) Let the clutch loose while mashing what is left of the throttle.
5) Wait patiently at the finish line and try not to gloat.
6) Nod understandably while your vanquished opponent spurts out a barrage of excuses.
7) Ride home while diligently trying to contain your smile within the confines of your helmet.
This isn't a rip on the yfz. That "little" 450 will make it around any motocross track and through all but the widest open trails in half the time it takes the big Zilla. Each quad has its place.

3-1/2) Lean forward! Also, don't dump the clutch but instead let it out quickly while "feeling" the grab of both the disks and the tires.
I thought that part was common sense. Practice a few times and you will see just how much you need to get yourself over the tank with any given launch rpm. I've seen people flip over backwards while performing a hard launch but I've never understood why. It is very easy to feel it in the clutch and in the machines balance. I slip the clutch VERY little but enough to keep my back off the pavement. As long as you don't let the machine intimidate you, it is quite easy to take-off at high rpm. It provides you with a great advantage over an opponent that does not do the same (especially on pavement).
