You need as many of each as the bank will allow. I ride 4 Bikes each with a different purpose.
Bikes:
1 Suzuki Hayabusa 195 mph absolutely no dirt roads.
2 Kawasaki KLR 650 a nice 50/50 bike tops around 90 on a good day. Good cheap dual sport bike.
3 Honda XR650R 85% dirt 15% street tops out at 108.
4 Yamaha YZ450 no Speedo just eye popping quick. Fun at the dunes with a paddle tire.
Quads:
1 Yamaha 660 Grizzly saw 68 on the Speedo once.
2 Honda 400ex nice little ride
3 Yamaha Bear Tracker ( don't laugh ) gets great gas mileage for a quad. Goes a lot of places the Griz struggles
with because its small and can turn through nasty sections. Body english still works on this size of quad. Big advantage BT's are easy to lift when your stuck (which happens often).
4 Suzuki Z400 another fun ride. Much more capable than the 400ex.
So what’s better? That changes from day to day and depends on who I ride with and where I ride to. Unfortunately I like them all and wish I had more.
Overall bikes are much more demanding of the rider and require a higher skill level to remain safe at comparable speeds. I get my rear kicked at least once a year by some sort of wreck on the dirt bikes. Broken ribs, ruptured tendons, etc. I've had mishaps on quads too, but so far they have been relatively minor (no surgery required). I am 38 so I don't heal up as quick, and quad riding with my family has become more relaxing than most of my other riding activities. I won't give up bikes and I can't give up Quads Love'm both. If finances only allowed me to pick one I'd get a night job.
Have fun choosing!

Bikes can be street legal and can be legally ridden where quads are illegal.
Quads are more fun in the dunes even though not necessarily faster.
Quads seem to be more fun at leisurly pace and easy terrain than most bikes.
Quads rule for work, tow, or haul.
Quads won't tip over in back of pickup.
One is not better than the other. They are just different.

bikes== faster, quicker, fit more places, light makes it easy to manhandle when needed,
quads== better traction, more stable at high speed, easyer to use in winter, generaly less work needed to maintain them.
i am faster in the woods on my cr250 then on my z, i even find it easyer to go through mud.. only because there are atv ryts that caise my z's swingare to get hung up.
i am planing on selling my cr or trading it for another atv though.

I have a CR 250, and 3 quads. The bike takes a heck of a lot more skill and concentration to ride fast through trails. Where the bike gains speed on trails by being able to cut and pick and choose lines, the quads make up for going over obstacles like trees or navigating really bad rutted trails.
Because I am a lazy bum, I can ride my quads faster than my bike in tight technical trails. But I would guess that all things being equal, a bike is faster all around when comparing STOCK units. I am sure there are plenty of quad owners on this fourm that could modify and beat a bike in the woods or in the open.
Look at races like the baja 1000 where nearly stock Honda XR650s are whupping ***. I don't know if a quad could top that or not...
Anyway, both are like 2 different flavor of ice cream. Lately, I am leaning towards the quad flavor, and thinking of selling the CR.
