Z400 mods without any $$$$
#1
I have a 2003 Z400. This is my first four stroke and I am not to familiar with what can be done to this bike. I tried to remove the air box lid to see if it would breath better, this is what Ive done to my 2 strokes in the past. The bike sounded alot better right off the bat, but when I tried to rev it up it kinda crapped out so I put the air box back on. Does anyone know What I can do without spending any money that would give me some extra power. I think it is probably a jetting issue, but Im not sure and dont want to hurt my bike.

you can take off your airbox, but your going to have to rejet. jets are only like $5. you can take off the choke. you can change around your sprockets pretty cheap, too.
oh, and where do you ride?

I ride mostly at the Oregon dunes. Sandlake, Winchester, etc.. Some dirt/trail but not much. I just like to get the most out of what I have. I'll try the jetting and see what that does, Thanks.

Thanks guys. How high of a jet do you suggest? I will probably run with the stock pipe for a while and I live at about 400 hundred feet above see level.

And in the wet season, like now, remove that spark arrestor too. You'll notice 5-10% more power. Plus it sounds a bit meaner.
Just don't do it when you're riding in a dry hay field or something.
