Default Z400 pilot jet question?

Im getting ready to rejet my Z. I am going to run without an air box lid and do some suggested mods to the stock pipe, (all I can afford to do right now). I have been reading up on what needs to be done with the jetting and think I have a pretty good idea of what main jet I need to run, but the question I have is the pilot jet. All the stuff I have read both in the forums here and out on various sights on the net suggest you turn the pilot jet out 3 turns. Is this with the pilot jet turned ALL the way in and then turning it out 3 turns, or do you turn it out 3 turns from its current (stock) position?

I'm in the same general spot that you're in, I've removed the lid and the silencer and rejetted. You don't actually do anything with the pilot jet itself, you're turning the pilot screw, located on the outside of the carb in front of the bowl. There's a plug over it you'll have to drill/screw/pull out. To answer your question you turn it ALL the way in and then turn it out 3-3.5 turns.

Thanks Marc, I just got the carb out of the bike. It took me a while to figure out how to remove the throttle cable from the side of the carb, but I managed. Did you like how your bike performed after you did all your mods?

Joe.
