Vinson..Stopped Running all of a sudden..no fuel??
#1
I have a 2003 Suzuki Vinson and it only has about 400 miles on it. Today, i started it up put into first and started moving. All of a sudden it just died and i figured it wa still too cold because it was only 39 degrees out. I tried to start it and it wouldn't start. Didn't matter if i used the choke or the thumb throttle. I wouldnt turn over and it had a dry sound when the battery was cranking. It seemed like it wasnt getting any gas but i checked the little **** on the side and it was on the right setting. I pulled it back into my garage and let it sit for a couple hours, and i just tried it again and it still won't start. I had ridden it through some hard mud a couple days earlier but it was cleaned and seemed fine afterwords. I pulled off the gas cap and put a flashlight into the tank and there were small metal shaving all over the bottom of it. That doesn't seem like it could be a good thing. It won't turn over, it sounds like its getting no fuel, and there are metal shavings at the bottom of the tank. Does anybody have any suggestions cause this things is still basically brand new and there is no reason for anything like this to happen.

We just received a recall notice on the vinson. It seems the screw's for the fuel petcock are to long and can cause the tank to crack and leak. Perhaps this has something to do with the chips in the bottom of your tank. Make sure the vent line on your gas cap isn't clogged, and you can check the drain on the carb. bowl to see if you've got gas in the carb.

thanks, but i took off some of the shrouding and took a look at the airbox and spark plug and is getting fuel, but a very limited amount, it barely even coats your hand if you cover the air intake. When i took the plug wire out it was only sparking every 5 seconds or so and when it did the sparks would come out of the cable and the rubber wire cover, but not out of the cap. If anyone knows the relay's, connections, and fuses for the ignition and have dealt with something similar to this that would be great.

How old is the gas? Oxygenated gas doesnt have a very long "shelf life" Varnish will start to form rather quickly if a fuel stabalizer isnt used. Had this happen to one of my machines after only a month. It started for a bit then died, had to take the carb apart and clean all the varnish out of the small ports then it ran fine.

Ya i thought about bad gas too. The gas has only been in the tank for 4 days though, so i dont think it would start to varnish yet, but thats a possibility. I'm just gonna take the carb out and clean it out and see if thats the problem. What I oculdn't believe when i was looking over the quad, is that there is no fuel filter, at least not one i can see unless somehow its in the petcock.

hey eigerman I'm no expert, but if you saw metal shavings in the gas tank and no fuel filter. Then chances are there could be shavings in the carbs blocking your jets(main or pilot).Re-check the floats and jets and clean them out.Maybe that could be it.Never hurts to try the cheaper solution first. Then you might want to remove that gas tank and remove those shavings. After repalcing it check it after a while and if it has shavings again then something is wrong..just a hunch

I put a filter on mine btween the petcock and carb. My freinds Vinson has quit on the trail twice. Took off the fuel line at the carb, turned it to prime and no fuel came out. Blew thru the line and it cleared it long enough to get us back to the truck. He took off his tank and cleand it and put a filter on his.
Make sure you have gas comming out of the line when on prime. There is also a screen in the fitting where the line hooks on to the carb, clean that along with your tank.
