Performance on my sons LT50A is somewhat lacking. What can be done to derestrict/improve performance

There's an exhaust restrictor that Suzuki usually puts in these quads that you can take out. It looks like a washer and is located in the front of the headpipe where it bolts to the cylinder. That should open it up quite a bit. My son has an 86 LT50 and it has all the performance i want him to have. It will even carry my 250lb butt around pretty good. However, I've heard others complain of their newer lt50's performance which makes me wonder if they've tuned the new ones down some.
