Default What does the expantion chamber on a 2 stroke do

I know its a basic question but I dont know the answer. Why is it that for power on a 4 stroke you run a strait pipe but on a 2 stroke an expantion chamber in the header pipe is needed for power

Good animation! The 4 stroke version is merely an exit pipe/muffler, where the 2 stroke pipe has a great deal to do with engine function.
