Default splitting the crankcase

I have a 87 lt4wd. I need to split the case and change the crankshaft. The manual says there is a special tool for this. Is there a different way to do this? I dont want to buy another tool.

Any help would be appreiceated.

Thanks,

The special tool is a case splitter, and one for my Honda was $145! I decided to do it my own way. Now, I will not be held responsible for any damage incurred toy our bike but here is what I did to split my case.

1. Remove everything from the outside of the cases(Cylinder, clutch, stator/flywheel, etc.
2. Check, then double check you have every bolt removed from the case halves.
3. Now that you have everything holding the cases together removed, take a new Razor blade and run it downthe case halves to break the seal between the gasket and the case halves. I prefer one of the triangular shaped blades that many hobby shops or even Wal-Mart sell.
4. Now that everything is removed, seal broken betweent he gasket and cases, use a soft faced rubber mallet and LIGHTLY tap the case halves apart. This may take awhile but eventually you will see them start to seperate. From there continue to slowly pull them apart.
5. If you can't get them to seperate with the mallet method, you can do what I did. I used a soft piece of wood and placed it against one of the Cylinder base studs, then hit the wood with a hammer a few times, then went to the opposite side and did the same. If none of this works, you may have to buy the tool or take it to a dealer to split the case for you. Good luck!

Default splitting the crankcase

Hey John,

First i have to get this case split. Would that be something you guys would do for me? I have part of it in the back end opened a bit but the rest is not.

We have to go ride. I have a 2wd polaris sport 400 that doesnt like a lot of snow. Once i get this suzuki done i should be able to hit the snow.

Thanks,
Bob

i didn't have to get one for my 86 250R, but it could be different for a 4wd. also i don't need one to split the cases on my 87 LT250R neither.

Default splitting the crankcase

Do i need to heat up the bearing on the crank to get the cover off? I have read about putting the crank in the freezer and heating the bearings on some engines. Do i need to do this?

Im still trying to seperate the crank case. I hope to work on it later.
