King Quad 700 Reverse Failure Solution
#11
I have to agree with the original post. I would recommend anyone interested in the machine wait until this problem has been fixed from an engineering perspective and not as a quick fix which is designed to minimize the problem during the warranty period.
I would also state that we have already paid for the 6 months in warranty in our purchase price so Suzuki owes this to us as owners. Lots of machines have only 6 months warranty whcih I dont have any real problem with given the nature of the way these machines are used.
Also, maybe this is a relatively small issue, but I can tell you that I cringe just a little, everytime I put it in reverse when I am miles from home, knowing I might need to limp back without. It's always in mind.
Many of us might never break reverse by just being careful and not flooring it in reverse for 2 minutes out of a mudhole. OK, but what if it goes when you really need it and you are up to your knees in a mud hole by yourself way out on the trail!
I really like the bike. But I think that they should come up with a mechanical fix and extend this to all us pionneers!
my 2 cents....

i work at suzuki ..its not a recall..if it was a recall everyones kig quad would be under recall..its just a product update..my dealer sold aboout 8 kingquads this year and only about 4 are on the list for the update..relax suzuki will take care of it..it was like the 2001 yamaha raptor..the trannys were falling out of them left and right..they fixed them..and even if your quad was out of warrenty they fixed them.calm down they will fix the issue ..besides no one is perfect..crap happens ...the product is only as good as who stands behind it..

As for pulling a 120 lb tree, there has to be more to the story. The King Quad is rated to pull up to 992 lbs. Generally, those numbers they give are conservative. Are you sure you didn't wet the belt say on your last ride out? Could of had moisture in there that didn't effect normal riding. When you put a heavy load on it, the belt slipped. No matter, you should of been able to hear it slip and been able to stop pulling before doing any damage. Also, find yourself a new dealer. Those prices are way out of line. A Suzuki belt for the Vinson lists for around $107. There's no way a King Quad belt should be almost double the price. I'm sure it is basically the same.

I wonder what the true design flaw is. Every quad i've ridden was able to go in reverse full throttle. Does this mean the reverse will only blow if the override button is pushed. I'm just glad it's the reverse and not forward gear.

Nyroc has a picture of the faild engine case boss and rev. gear listed on his site it is under the tech tip for the KQ. By the looks of the pic it was a design flaw. There is just not enough meat on the case. Just as with the first Raptors trans I'm sure the case will be redesigned to suport extra stress in the following year models.

Hi y'll,
Well I just got a letter in the mail from Suzuki title "Product Update Campaign". The first paragraph states that this is a Mandatory Product Update Campaign.... I haven't had a chance to call my dealer and find out if they are up to speed on this, I'll will post more later...
The Updates are about to begin!!!

..screw the band-ad fix.. hey screwsuzuki..do it right for the customers the first time and replace the case with a redesigned one...so ok.....if one goes out today..is the replacement part the same crap as the one that exploded..??....or do they have a better aluminum case yet..they lost my trust..!!! I would never have bought a king quad had I'd know this..

I've heard so much hype over this reverse issue so I had to make a comment. I beleive that this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. I took my KQ in on saturday and they will have the undated ECM in by mid-week. I don't believe that this is a bandaid repair but more for stopping the prolonged abuse of the limit override in reverse. Suzuki quote " It has been found in some unique situations that the reverse the reverse override switch at near maximun rpm, under high load for an extended period of time may over heat the reverse idler gear and cause the gear to seize to the reverse idle gear shaft". No Kidding! Were not sure of the exact details or event when the failures happen but it would be nice to know and see. It's interesting that Suzuki took so long to introduce the KQ because they wanted to test it properly. I'm sure if this happen during the tests they would have fixed it, especially on a brand new introduction. The test riders probably had no problems because they are pro-riders that would never put the unit under those extreme situations or prolonged use of the rev limiter in reverse because they know something will break. I think the mistake Suzuki made was putting the override on the KQ. I don't have it on my Vinson and I've always had the power and speed to back out of situation or to pull someone. If there was no over ride then we would have accepted it like we did on the Vinson. Yes there are those who disconnect the limiter but if they had a failure they would stay silent, pay for it and not blame Suzuki. It,s on the KQ because of the complaints with the Vinson but the limiter never bothered me. I'm not new to this I've had ATV'S since 1982 starting with a Honda Big Red and have had various machines since. Never in a reverse situation have I used more than 2/3 throttle because I understand that there is to much strain on the working parts. Many time I've witnessed ATV riders in mud in low gear and the throttle WFO. I just sit back and wonder if the motor is going to blow. I would never abuse my 4 wheel drive truck like that and many of you wouldn't either but once on the quad we try to over work and over rev time after time. Every machine has it's faults and week points and we must respect this. Know the limitations of these machine, don't abuse them and you will have years of fun. Just my thoughs and I don't mean to offend anyone but when I read some of these threads I just shake my head. Maybe this is a bigger concern and if so Suzuki has always been there. On my 2002 Vinson they had shifter problems and they fixed it with a update no big deal. I've heard comments of a heavier casing but that would add weight and if so then people would complain that the KQ is heavier than the BF.
