First, take up most of the slack. Try and get a couple of loops on the spool as you ratchet it right down tight. Last, tie off the loose ends. I tie the non ratchet part of the strap back on itself so it can't slip out easily, and wind can't get the extra strapping flopping around as you drive. It is good practice to stop and check the straps after driving a bit, say 10miles, and any time you take a rest/fuel stop as well. Sometimes straps stretch a bit, or some 'settling' may occur during transport. Also make sure the straps you are using have a WORKING rating that is over your quads fully ready to ride weight.
