Default z400 needle clip question.

I finally decided to buy a slip- on hmf pipe, i also bought a k/n power lid and k/n air filter for my 2003 z400. I bought the jets from hmf recomendations,165-180, so i should be in range there with a little trial and error for my elevation, temp. ect. I searched the forums and read most of the jetting questions and responses. My question is with the needle. I've read the stock one only has 2 positions and the clip should be moved down(toward the pointy end i assume?). Or go with the dynojet needle. Being cheap,or thrifty, i dont want to buy the kit for $50 if i don't have to. I'm a machinist, and can add another groove or two if needed(toward the pointed end?) Any input?
What does the needle do exactly, control throttle response? My buddy did this mod to his ds650 and his needle had 5 clip settings, and he also cut the spring under the clip 1/4 inch off. Also, hmf didn't say i have to change my idle jet but i read it's 22.5 stock, and to goto a 25, and 2 1/2 -3 turns out on idle mixture.
Any knowledge is appreciated.
