I would be very obsessive about filter cleaning however. The trouble with light oils is that they are drawn out of the filter and onto the dust that collects on the filters outside. This is a well known problem with K&N's!

I have a K&N on my truck. I don't trust it in very dusty conditions, so I run an "Air Force Filter" (sold by K&N). It is a very course foam wrap that goes on the outside of the filter. I oil it with K&N oil, because it touches the K&N filter. I clean it often!

I think everyone will agree, that any oil, even vegatable cooking oil, is better than no oil.
It isnt really the kn oil which causes problems...although it isnt as sticky or even designed to work with foam, its designed to work with the cotton gause. Its the dispersants and solvents, that come packaged with the kn oil, that helps the oil spead evenly and then evaporate out, leaving only the oil on gause. But the dispersants and solvents are harmful to foam rubber.
Im surprised there wasnt a warning on the twin air site about using kn oil. Other foam air filters, have warnings about not using it.
Check out these two sites
ctracing
uniflow
Note they talk about the oil by type, and not by brand, they arent pushing their specific oil, just foam air filter oil.

Anybody who doesn't know how to service an A/F certainly doesn't have any business inside a motor
