Are Cams worth it?
#1
I have a '03 Z400 and it is piped with a K&N air filter and I was wondering if cams are worth the money? Does it give you one more gear in the sand for climbing? Does it keep your 4-wheeler the same reliability as stock? Does it still run good?

I think I might go that route, it is just so damn much to have them installed. I need to work on a pipe and other things first I suppose!

I also have cams, drz gasket/springs. Nice gain, good pull, very happy.
As for the noise in the valves, it is noticeable but only really at idle. Other than that i dont see how it bugs me cus i never hear it when im riding.
You should think about putting them in yourself. Just cams are real easy and the base gasket is really that much harder. I had no experience rebuilding any engines what so ever and i installed bot my cams, drz gasket, springs, and new rings, and have 195psi compression now.

Yes the DRZ gasket and springs are from the DRZe bike, which is the same motor except it has thinner gasket, better cams, heavier springs, higher rpm CDI, and bigger carb i beleive.
No a better cam chain is not needed. Check your tensioner and see how many clicks are left and unless it needs replaced you dont need to.
