if you put it in neutral with the clutch out it should roll with no resistance on the engine. and you can kick it in neutral with the clutch out and it won't move. only if its in gear would you have to pull the clutch in to move it.

if he just mixed the gas wrong then the rings should still be good unless he mixed it to lean. but by what your saying it mixed to rich, so drain the tank and carb and put a new plug in it. then mix the gas right and try to start it. it should start but smoke alot till you burn all the old gas out. plus it might foul the plug a few times till its all burnt off.

they came stock with headlights but people either take them off or roll them over and twist it all to crap then remove them.

and you kick it backwards, same as a dirtbike. hondas kick forward and quadsports kick out to the side.

yup you should be able to move it easily. every atv or bike i have owned was able to move in neutral with the clutch lever out.

it depends on what you have done. shop rate per hour plus parts. probably between $700 and $1000. if you did it yourself you would save a ton of money. if you get a shop manual and you can read and understand it then you can do anything in it. i have always done my own work on my quads. i've seen some of the work done by a shop. not good. plus all my buddies come to me to fix there bikes because they know i know what i'm doing.

Look, if you haven't had it running, it may not be in neutral. My '85 can be hard to find neutral unless the engine is running. If you kick it and the bike jumps forward then it is still in gear. Otherwise you have some sort of tranny problem, and rebuilding the engine will not fix this. I would drain the carb and gas tank, put in fresh gas and a new, properly gapped plug. Clean and re-oil the airfilter, then see if she'll fire. It wouldn't hurt to clean the carb if you have the knowhow either. It is super easy to get the pilot and main jet out to check/clean/or change. Just ask and we'll help you out. Good luck! Those old racers are still a lot of fun.

I don't know of any websites, but the 85-86 is easy to tell from the 87-90. First the 85/86 has a strait seat and not the T-seat. The next give away is the swingarm has a round housing bearing carrier and not a square box type carrier. The engine dosen't have a power valve. The front shocks are shorter in comparison. There is a single downtube in front of the engine and the exhaust exits the cylinder at a side ways angle to clear the frame. They have four lug rear wheels if I remember correctly. I can't tell you how to tell the 85 from the 86 though.

Only a few small differences between 85 and 86. As you sit on the quad, on the left side there is a frame tube that runs almost vertical and is just rearward of where the front. rear fenders mate up. There should be a metal tag with the build date on there and a serial # for the quad. These things run like cars model year wise, so something built 7/85 is likely an 86 model year. You won't need the year for the Clymer, it covers all years of the model if you end up buying one.

Is the quad bone stock? If it is, the Clymer has all the stock jetting and such in it.

Where are you at in NY, I'm out in Rochester.
