Hello,
I'm setting up my z400 to use for Colorado mountain trail riding. I've done the math for putting 22 inch tires on the rear (it HAS to have more rear ground clearance), and a 13 tooth front sprocket on the front to get the gearing back down. The numbers show that I still won't get the gearing back down to even stock this way, and I don't want to lose any rear clearance by putting more teeth on the back sprocket.
So...., does any one know if I can buy a 12 tooth front sprocket for the z400 ?
(a Rekluse auto clutch may be next)
P.S.- I have done all of this to my Raptor, which turned it into a great trail quad, but have just upgraded from it to the Z400 for trail riding here in Colorado. (22 front Razr tires, 22 inch rear Razr's, 12 tooth front sprocket, rear rack, etc.)
Thanks,
Lorrin

My Raptor is a 2001, so I want to get out from under the "worrying about the transmission" cloud that the 2001's have. It has worked great for a mountain trail quad, but I got a great deal on a 2004 Z400 (less than I can sell the Raptor for), so I decided to make the trade. The Raptor also has a VERY tall first gear, which makes it harder for technical trail riding. I like to introduce new riders to ATVing, and the Raptor scares the crap out of them, and the manual trans also hard for a lot of people to master.
I just found a site that sells 12 tooth sprockets for the LTZ/KFX/Arctic Cat dvx. It is "sprocket specialists".
Thanks,

Rocky Mountain ATV has 13, 14, and 15 tooth sprockets, but not 12 tooth ones.
Going up 2 inches in tire height requires either a 2 tooth change (smaller) in front, or a one tooth change in front and 2 or 3 more teeth in the rear. Raising the number of teeth in the rear makes the rear sprocket larger, reducing the ground clearance, which is the opposite of what I want. Aso, usually the rear skid plate doesn't fit if you add more than one or two more teeth to the rear sprocket.

the 13t sprocket with the 22 inch tires should bring you down back to stock gearing . if you find a 12t sprocket its going to wear your chain out alot faster than changing the rear sprocket because of the angle.when i had my z stock i sometimes ran 22inch tires with the 13t and it felt like it was back to the stock gearing to me. and in my opinion i wouldn't spend my money on the rekluse .

why did you downgrade your quad? Trail riding is exactly what the raptor was designed to do? anyway, whats a Suzuki Z400's stock gearing?

Yes, my piped and jetted Raptor with 22 inch Razr's and a rear rack is an awesome trail quad. It has so much low end torque, that beginner's (and even some of my experienced friends) can't even ride it. Every time they touch the throttle, the response is so quick that they immediately let off of the gas without meaning to. I was hoping that the LTZ400 would be a little more manageable for them, along with being brand new (reliable), and geared lower. The 2001 Raptors have a very high 1st and 2nd gear. I'm not quite sure if I should have gotten a 4wd ATV instead for the snow here in the winter, but I come from the dirt bike world, so performance is very important to me. My other quad is a Polaris Scrambler 4wd, which is sporty for a 4wd, but nothing like the Raptor or LTZ400.
I still ride with my dirt bike friends some times, and I think that they have learned to respect that an ATV can be faster than a dirt bike on a lot of trails because it can corner so well.
Thanks for your help,
Lorrin
