Default King Quad Front Differential Question

My king has 36 miles on it and last night I was just playing around with all the gears and I tried out the front differential lock after I put it in 4 wheel drive. When I goosed it, it did not have any pep and it acted like it was going in reverse without the override button on. Not to confuse anyone it was going forwards but it seemed to me it should have just as much pep as it does in 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive. Am I doing something wrong? Should I press the override button when going forwards in differential lock? It didn't make sense to me why it does this. I tried it a second time, did the same thing, I took it out of differential lock and back in standard 4 wheel drive and it had acted normal again..
