Trouble with my Eiger
4000 acres is a lot of dirt. Especially in Ashland, where, in town, you can't touch a house for less than $350K these days.
If you ever come here to ride, you won't be disappointed. There are still a thousand and one places here that will challange the best quad with the best rider. In four wheel drive!
Did you notice that your Mud Lites aren't really any taller than your stock tires?

Trouble with my Eiger
I just bought a new 2005 eiger 400 with manuel tranny. it seems to have loud engine noise, runs ok, no problems, just a little nervous about the noise. I can hear the engine over the muffler, kinda sounds like rod knock. let me know if this is normal. I know if I take it to the dealer they are going to say it is normal. Thanks!

Cruise by the dealer and fire up one of his. If it sounds the same, yer in the game.
If not, take it back and let them listen to it. The auto makes some noise but thats not possible on yours.
Check yer fluids.
AK, hes actually south in some mountains of VERY RICH people. They have the smallest spread.

Trouble with my Eiger
Queswtion 1.
I would guess that there is water in the gas. I never had good luck with HEET but it is worth a try. I would pull the fuel line off the carb and drain some fuel into a coffee can. Shake the quad while doing this because water will just sit in small pockets in the tank. When your done with this then remove the float bowl and check out the main for any junk and this will get any water out of the float bowl. Thats my guess it seems to make sense that this happened after you washed it.
Question 2.
My Eiger has made engine noise since new. I have about 2000 miles and never had a problem with it but hear another one run just to make sure.

The more I think about it the more I don't think it's water. I didn't spend 1/100th of the time washing it like I usually do... Just hosed off the dust.
Something I failed to mention... while it was running, if I partially blocked the intake with my hand, I could rev it up like normal for a few seconds... so I think it's gotta be garbage in the carb causing a lean condition; starving it for air fattens up the AFR so it runs right. Sound plausible?
I'll read thru my service manual tonite to see how hard its going to be to pull/disassemble the carb. Any tips/tricks for that or is it pretty straight forward? Will I need to buy any gaskets or anything for the reassembly?
I appreciate the help from you all.
OH also, both my Eigers make kinda of a knocking sound occasionally when taking off. More so when they're cold. Mine (the problem child) knocks a little even after warm. Since they don't do it in neutral, I always figured it was the clutch mechanism with the auto tranny and since they both did it, I wasn't too worried about it.

loosen the clamps on both ends of the carb and twist the carb. Remove 4 screws abd bowl will fall off. EASY, Well not really. The screws are always hard to get out and 1 always has to be a M/F!! Replace them with some allen head bolts the same size and never worry about em again. Unscrew the main jet and clean er out. When you put it back together make sure the choke cable seats properly in its boot.

Of course, you'll see you have to take it out the left side, (driver's side?) and yes, one screw WILL be a M/F. If you use a BRAND NEW phillips #2 bit, you'll have better luck. And old screw driver will cause you serious heartache.
Getting the water out of MY carb was an almost impossible task for whatever reason, and I only got every last bit when I pulled it out and completely disassembled it.
I didn't try alchohol (HEET). Growing up in Alaska, I should have known better, but I'd forgotten about it. It's super cheap, doesn't hurt a thing, and works REALLY good.

I loaned my old lawn mower to my wifes cousin. He brought it back 20 mins later and said it just dies on him. His gas can had almost pure water in it. (Never leave a gas can outside without a cover on it) 4 hours later and a lot of curse words it was back to running great again. Just another reason why stupid people should be killed.

Trouble with my Eiger
I pulled the carb off yesterday... the hardest part was getting the choke cable unscrewed from the damn carb body because of the tight area to work in. Took it apart and didn't see anything in it that was plugging it up except a tiny bit of gelled gas that was down under that baffle in the bowl. Pulled the main jet and it looked clean. One thing I did notice was there's supposed to be a filter screen on the gas inlet nipple according to the service manual. There wasn't one on mine. Cleaned everything up and looked it over.
Put it all back together with new gas in the take and still the same crap... revs almost normal if the choke is partially on, but then it'll backfire a little and still smells lean. Turn the choke off and it won't rev hardly at all without sputtering and bogging. I'll admit defeat, gonna schedule an appt on Monday.
