Default LT250E needs rings. Help?

I got a Suzuki LT250E for free. It was a pile, and wasn't even close to working condition. Long story short, I got it all back together and running. The only thing it needs is rings. It has like 10,000 miles on it, it smokes, and it starts REALLY hard. The only way to get it running is if I spray it with starter fluid, and put some oil down the spark plug hole to bump the compression up a little. It needs rings. I don't mind doing the work or spending the $28, what scares me is setting up the cam timing. Ya know, getting the chain on the right tooth etc. Can someone give me some pointers, or point me in the direction of a book or something with a procedure? Thanks a lot.

Did you replace your rings yourself? I'm looking at that same job. I don't see your YouTube instructional video to help me thru mine...

11 year old thread dude.
Replace the piston also. It's wore too.
Better buy a manual.

I have a paper Clymers manual but it's not a full service reference. I don't see torques and very much detail in it.

I do believe I'll need a piston and cylinder bore but I won't know that till I get in there and the procedure is almost identical to re-ringing so if I can get help on that, I'll be fine if the cylinder is damaged.

Sad that no one ever replied to this guy's post in 11 years, eh? Thanks for your reply to mine. I've requested a link to a manual posted in another link. My dry compression is 60 psi and I didn't oil it up to compare. The seller a couple years ago said that it started but we needed to do tricks to get it to fire like hotwire the starter and pressurize the fuel tank to get fuel up to the carb. They had a system rigged to do that. I did rebuild the fuel pump and am trying to restore all the factory systems correct. The starter circuit ended up being a defective neutral relay.

If anyone has a digital manual for an 85 LT250E model, I'd be grateful to have it before I take the head off and have to start filling in what's missing from my Clymers creatively.

I looked, there is a .5 and 1.0 over pistons available. You need one of those, and you're right you'll need to get into it and measure.
Also, starting your own thread usually can get you quicker replies.

BTW, welcome to the forums.
