Default Z 400 POWER

I want to get a Z 400, i figure that i can get a nice used one for like 3500-4000, i never have actually ridden one but i hear good things. How much power does it actually have, can you pull the front end up no prob just by giving it some gas? or would you have to pop the clutch, those types of things. I also wanted to know about how it handles cornering and in the air. Any input is awsome.

How does it compare to the 400 ex also?

z400's r wheelie machines, love to wheelie and can do it forever. corners on rails in my opinion with proper throttle control. backend likes to slide with stock radials. handles very well in the air but front shocks arent amazing but better than ex's and hardcore jumpers or racers will upgrade. ive had mine for about 3-4 months now and absolutly love it., smokes ex anyday.

well the 400ex will only compare if its tires are good, traction is the key...with mud lite tires on the 400ex it will smoke a z400 anyday, so dont worry about getting a z400 thinking it has more power, because it doesnt, you need traction and i recomend mud lite tires, they are the real deal. Also for jumping the knobbies on the mud lite tires provide a cushion lite landing so no need for new 1000 dollar shocks, just get the mud lite tires.

z is quicker and has more power and higher top end, ask neone, stock to stock, z smokes the ex, if u put mud lites on an ex put em on the z and make it even and z still wins. the front z shocks r better than ex's so for big jumps or racing then u wuld need to upgrade shocks on BOTH. plus Z has better technology in suspension, and engine.

ty mark, i have a z and have ridden many ex's and i thought the ex's were fast and pretty good until i rode my z and i was in shock, the z rips compared to the ex, and thats exactly why they r so much more, 03 ex and 03 z's differ in price by like 5-700 dollars. plus the Z has reverse. z's power reminds me of a 450r a little bit, not like yfz simply because yfz has very jerky power but z has smooth power. z also has very comfortable seat and ride and smooth clutch and throttle. a very comfortable and fast machine to ride. A halfway you might say between full race machines like 450r and yfz, and rider-friendly trail machines. Maybe that's why it was atv of the year in 03.....

The 2005 and 2006 400EX's has reverse too. Anyway, yeah, your right. The Z400 is a beast, not like the 450's, but good. It is rider friendly and does have a smooth powerband. I currently also drive a Z400, a modded one. Boy does this thing rip. This is the quad I was practicing clutching with. Now, the 400EX and the Z400 is the same price. The only reason someone would go for a 400EX (new) is because they love Honda. The Z400 is a DOHC (acclerates higher and faster), liquid cooling, the shocks are up to par with the 450's, it's lighter, and has 398cc compared to the 400EX's 397cc. As you can see, the Z400 comes with more "bang" for the buck!
