LT 500 Gearing for the Dunes
#2
Well, that's a difficult question for sure... usually not a one size fits all answer for sure.
Depending on diameter of your tires, # of paddles, HP output, sand conditions,etc..
I cannot say what works best for me at Glamis as I've never been there. I primarily ride St. Anthony in Idaho where the sand is very soft and loose (Robs alot of HP)
For just dune riding, I pretty much run the stock configuration.. For hill shooting I'll gear it down 2 teeth on the rear sprocket as it'll pull 4th up the hill a little better..
Oh, I forgot to mention, the 88+ trans has a little different final ratio in the upper gears (3,4 &5 I think), to it can pull a little taller gear depending on your HP.
The best advice I can give is to get a couple of sprockets, and do the trial and error thing.
I buy my stuff from Primary Drive thru Rocky Mtn Atv, so the investment isn't that big to have a few combinations...
Gearing can make a big difference in whether you get paddled, or paddle someone else up the hill...
Hope this helps you some..
Regards,
