85 to 88 Suzuki LT230S Quadsport help.
hey guys,
so after having my wheeler (86 230s) torn apart for months, I finally finished putting it back together last night. I took it for a short ride down the trail, as did my mechanic brother, and everything seemed to be working great. Of course, now that I had my hopes up for going for a ride today after work, I get on it, ride a ways down the trail, and it stalls out on me. It continues to do this, seemingly happening just about everytime I slow down for a stop. Brought it back home, it starts, idles for a while, then randomly shuts down. What do you think could be causing this? My dad suggested that the gas could be bad, as it was from a can sitting in my garage for who knows how long. I will try new gas, but my brother does not seem to think this is the case. He seems to think that it could be something electrical? Any ideas?
Much thanks,
Alex

Hey guys, haven't posted in a while cause I've been the hospital. Good to go now. While I was in the hospital I finally decided what I want to do but I'm not sure if it can be done so I'm asking you guys. Would it be possible to put an rm250 engine in my 87 230e? The reason for this is because I can't afford a new quad and I need something that will give me a shot at keeping up with the 450's.
I know that I have probably missed the answer to this question but here it is again. Since we all want wider fronts and rears and no company is making them has anyone out there checked to see if maybe aftermarket quadracer-250 a-arms and swingarms will work with just slight mods done to them? Everyone please jumping here, thanks
lt250r a arms can be modified to work I believe. I think I remember reading that you would need r front shocks as well.
Swinger? I don't think they swap.
lt250r rear axle I think will work...
Do a search! It's more accurate than my memory! Keep in mind these guys are also doing the swaps on s model bikes and not 230e's! There are frame differences between the e's and s's!

Another option to consider, if you want a bike that keeps up with the 450's, would be to buy a new bike. When you figure in the costs involved in modifying your 230 it just may be worth a different bike. Motor, parts, modifications, and time all add up quick. If I were interested in more speed (which I'm not) I would look for an lt250r or z400 or 450 for that matter. I don't know about your area but around here people are unloading lt250r's left and right, and at VERY reasonable prices. Sure some need work but you'd be starting out with a bike that is already set up for what you are trying to do.
Thanks for the follow up. I agree with just getting a 450 to keep up with the others, I just don't have the money and 250r's are still getting a good price right now. I was just thinking I could get. A dirt bike engine for a lot less money and I would still have my quadsport. It is also the very first quad I ever got back in 87 and I wouldn't let it go for nothing. To me it would be more satisfying to fix up my quadsport so it will run with today's quads, if nothing more than to just see the looks on the other riders faces when they are getting passed by a 20 year old quad ridden by an old man. Classic!
With as light as the quadsport is I figure if you can get 30 rear wheel horsepower you would be able to keep up with today's 450's and I figure a 250 2-stroke can get those numbers. I don't think you can get about 20 rear wheel hp with a 230 engine. If I am wrong please let me know, it will cost less to pump up the 230 since I already have the engine.
