85 to 88 Suzuki LT230S Quadsport help.
yes take all the 8mm bolts out and it will come apart. theres one hiding by the foot peg that you cant see that good and you have to use a wrench to get that one out. at least thats how mine was
but before you go ordering rings and a piston. go have the bore measured first, so you can order the correct piston. pistons are size-matched to the bore and the topend gasket kit is also sized by the bore. and have the bore checked to see if it is out of round. also check the rod for play when you remove the top end. the rod should not move side to side more than a couple thosandths. basically no more than a sheet of notebook paper thick. you can check side play by using feeler gauges. slide the feeler gauge in between the rod and crankshft halves on both sides. you can go to the Vault for timing instructions. make sure when you reassemble to use Lucas Oil Stabilizer on the wrist pin and cylinder walls to prevent scarring the walls or pins.
reassebly isn't to hard. put the cylinder base gasket on with a very thin controlled layer of RTV (red high temp), seat the piston in the cylinder, then slide the cylinder down to the crankcase , torque to 2 bottom 10mm nuts to about 12 ft lbs. then add the head: note remember where you removed to 2 copper washers on the head.
tightening the head: in a cris cross pattern tighten the 12mm nuts down snug, i then go back over them each at about 15-20 foot lbs of torque( be sure to use oil on the threads of the jugs studs), then tighten the last 2 10mm nuts down to about 12 lbs.
valve cover: dont remove the bolts all of the way out. loosen each one til they can fall out but dont let them fall out. its a pain to remember where they all go. once they are all loose, use a small hammer and a striaght screwdriver tap all around the valve cover til it pops loose. dont tip it the bolts will fall out.
refer to the Vault for proper valve cover installation and sealing.
that's if its the mag cover. if it the clutch cover there is a hiden bolt in the oil filter cover.
sounds like too much wear on the shifting drum inside the tranny. or the shifting forks were installed incorrectly. either way you need to split the engine case. you'll need a complete gasket kit. it'll run you about $40- #50 for a good Vesrah kit.
Sorry gents, it's been a while. Got hit with that nasty flu and got knocked down for a couple months. spent some time at the hospital with no WiFi.
Glad to see some new blood in here, keepin the big thread and 230's alive.
