85 thru 88 230s rear shocks are all the same length. ( 12.63 inches) You should have no problem at all.

I see what he is talking about. The caliper hanger that hold the brake pads in place has one of the arms bent. If there is no way of straightening it then it will need replaced. I would try to straighten it in a vice. then use some penetrating oil to unstick you caliper.

I recently purchased a 1987 suzuki quadsport 230. I am 15 years old and i worked all summer to buy this bike, i payed $650 for it. When the motor turned over it made a grinding sound.my dad thinks it is the crank bearings. Is there anything else it could be???

i have a problem with my QS the lights dont work they used to be dim now they dont work and its not the bulb. i was told it was the rectifier and i just want to know if this is true and what a rectifier actually does (electrical systems are my weakness). also my tail light is non existan and i was wondering if an old tail light woould work, i have no problem fabricated a mounting bracket

There is 3 things that I can think of that cold be the issue.
1: Lighting coil: Easy to check.
2: rectifier: Easy one to check for.
3: lose ground: Vary easy to check for.

The electrical system on a 230s is very simple and easy to trouble shoot.

Their are 2 grounding points for lighting ( that I can think of). One is near the rectifier itself. Make shure there is no paint between the bolt and the frame. The other is near the rear light.

Use a volt meter to check the output of the rectifer. It should read around 12-14 volts with the engine running.

Use the ohm meter to test the lighting coil. Its the orange and black wires coming up from the stator on the left side of the engine/motor. Should be in the 0-2 ohm range ( with the engine not runing of course). There should be a quick disconnect under the fuel tank.

You mentioned that the light grew weaker before it quit working. Sounds like a coil or rectifer issue to me. Your on the right track. Just remember, the lights on the 230 work like this. 1: lighting coil, 2: Rectifier, 3: light. ( providing the grounds and bulbs are good.)
If you have any questions for me. I can be reached directly at: mcdaniel.chuck@gmail.com

Good luck.

Could be the clutch. Or even the trans.
Do you have any history on the 230?
To work all summer to buy a quad that has issues is a real bummer!!!!!!!!
I will be proud to help you all I can. And im shure there are several more on here that feel the same way.

Can you give more detail as to the noise. What part of the motor/engine did it come from? Can you tell?
Q.S.230 has a good idea. check the oil level. I'd hate for the bottom end to lock up.

P.S.
I was 15 when Suzuki released the 230 in 85. Ive had mine since 87. Stick with it. The Q.S. is a very good machine. But like any machine, you can have problems.

Good luck.
