I dont have any pics of the cam, but there are marks on the end. Should be pretty easy to see. Use a screwdriver in the sparkplug hole to find TDC or take the mag cover off.

Once you're sure its timed right, put your thumb over the sparkplug hole to seal it off (after you got it back together of course) and have somebody kick it over. If it doesn't blow your thumb off the hole, you bent a valve. Or you could just tear it back down and check the valves. Its up to you.

i got a couple questions the lt230 i recently purchased will barely start and if it does its with starting fluid only. could this possibly be something to do the carb or the fact that it has low compression? sorry I'm new to the whole ATV thing

well an engine needs three basic things to run, air, fuel, and spark. Did you try a new plug yet, thats were I would start. Also if its burning oil that could be a sign of bad valve seals or worn out rings. I'd pick p a manual and jsut start checking things out

So I ordered my throttle and clutch cables off of an ebay store and the clutch cable worked but the throttle cable appears to have the wrong connector.

Mine's an '86 that as far as I can tell is totally stock mechanically. When I opened up the throttle lever box or whatever you want to call it, I saw that the lever on the thumb throttle pulls a puck shaped end piece with the cable going into the side. Now the cable the guy sent me was an itty bitty cylinder of pop can-ish proportions with the cable going into the bottom of the cylinder.

Which is right? The guy insists his is right but obviously it isn't for mine.

Also what is the other end of the cable supposed to be? I didn't take apart that end yet on the wheeler since I knew the top end was different already.

Just hit up your bicycle store for levers and cables. You'll save a ton of money, they work the same, more to choose from, and did I mention WAY cheaper?

the 400ex is doing nice. the weird thing is, is that its going really smooth. I just got the engine done a few days ago. nothing huge but its got a hotrods crankshaft, weisco high compression piston, stage 2 hotcam, and stage 2 porting. its going to be just a quick play bike.
