alright well you would be much much happier with 20x10x9 tires, theyre much more readily available, they improve handling greatly, and will give you some more torque. with 20s, i run 13/41 gearing and im so happy with it i wouldnt change a thing (i ride open fields, tight woods, and mx, so its a very versatile ratio) however i could use a little more topend on the big tracks (but im not sacrificing low end either, so i may eventually swap in the 5th gearset from an LT250S).
if you wanna be smart and definatley save big money in the long run, you MUST get new steel sprockets (i prefer sunstar) and a BEEFY O-RING chain. the reason i stress this so much is because 230's are very prone to chain derailment and ultimatley the destruction of a $240 stator cover). you will want a case saver from bike bandit. theyre like $5 and will help prevent damage to your case. also definatley get new swingarm bearings and axle bearings. if you find that axle bearings arent a fun job (i dont mind doing it but im sure some do), you may want to invest in a double row carrier for less often bearing replacement. while your back there, a used 85-86 LT250R axle will give you an extra 1.5" of width per side in the rear for cheap. in the front, 2+3 or 3+2 (dont remember which) will give you an extra 2" in the front. used 85-86 LT250R front shocks will bolt right in if they are set on the lowest preload setting, and they will make you cry tears of joy from the improvement in handling. a used LT230E rear shock gives you a nitrogen reservoir and a slightly better spring rate.

and now for motor mods...
boring the cylinder .080" (2MM) over (243cc) with a high compression wiseco piston (10.25:1) will give a healthy power increase and you'll still be able to run pump gas. a 30mm mikuni carb (VM or TM) will also give some extra power for mild motors, especially in the topend. if your motor is pretty intense, you can run a 32mm. its pretty fussy to get it set up, but it will destroy big bikes if its running good. and of course, run a UNI filter. DG makes the best performing pipe out there, but its loud (sounds like sex to me). if you want to get into the motor a little more, cams are a pricey option that supposedly help quite a bit with power (havent tried any yet). web camshafts and megacycle make a bunch, but they require pricey springs, retainers, and rockers. probably the best cam option would be an OEM LT250S cam. it has a more aggressive profile but is compatable with stock valvetrain components. speaking of LT250S parts, a head from one will bolt on and give you a +1mm bigger valve (dont remember which) and better flowing ports. on the subject of ports, 230 heads could really use some serious poting. the stock intake port is boxy and doesnt flow too well. porting is free power, but takes real skill. its pretty much an art in my opinion. ill try to dig up an old tutorial that went into great detail on porting a 230 head.
i know im missing a bunch of stuff, but this is all that i can recall for now.
