NEW z250 or USED z250
#5
Well, since you are able to spend up to about $4000, and you are looking into buying a used 250, you should go get a nice used z400 or 400ex since you have no problem buying used. Dont waste your money on the 250, youll outgrow it too quick if you have any experiance at all.

If you have the money buy a used z400 or something to that affect, the z is really fun quad to screw around on...and you can mod it up a little bit to fit your style (Wich I am doing rite now)

If you think that the used z250 is in decent shape, I'd go for that. Most likely you can deal a little below the $3,000 figure. The biggest problem with used bikes is the chance of a hidden problem. The biggest problem with new bikes is that they will loose a big chunk of their value the minute it leaves the showroom floor.
As others have pointed out, there is a good chance that you will want to move up to a larger bike than a 250. If you buy the used bike, use it for a while and then decide to sell it, you will probably get very close to what you paid for it as long as you keep it in good condition. Do the same thing with the new bike and you'll loose bunch of money.
It's your first quad, once you get into it you may learn that you want a different type of ride. Once you get some experience you will be in a much better position to decide just what your 'ultimate' ATV will be. That's when you spring for the new one.
When I first got into ATVing, I bought a used Warrior for $3,000. Rode it for 9 months and figured out that I really wanted to have a utility bike. Sold it for $2,800 and went out and bought a bike more suited to what I wanted.
