Eiger spark plug and valves questions
#1
Alright I admit it I am a little on the cheap side. With two kiddies and a third one on the way I like to save a little money when I can. I am replacing the plug on my '02 Eiger and see the Autolite 4303 is a replacement for the pricier NGK. I have always like Autolites in most automtive applications but would never run anything but an NGK in my GSXR or my wife's Maxima, for example since they run like dirt on anything else.
Any problems with the Autolite's in the Eiger?
Also, if anybody could point me to the instructions for chekcing and adjusting the valve clearance on the Eiger I would appreciate it greatly.

i put over 6,000 miles on my 2002 eiger auto, had the valves adjusted one time, but from the sound of the motor you would thing it needed it, they all sound like that,as for the plug, no problems...... is your an automatic, either way you'll get good service out of it.. when i had my valves adjusted the mechanic said i could have went a lot longer, about 4,000 miles when it was done......... way out, out, " life's good "

6000miles, and still going? Pretty impressive for a budget 400. Yup automatic 4wd, added a Ramsey 2500lb remote equipped winch, Swisher snowplow, windscreen. Can't beat this machine for the money in my humble opinion. The only thing I am thinking of adding is bigger wheels and tires in the future.
It's been running just a little off, backfiring on shutdown, power seems a little off. My dad is using it next weekend for some ice fishing shack hauling duties and I wanted to get everything tip top for him, maybe get him to buy one! Any other maintenance stuff I should be looking at besides the valves (maybe), oil and filter, plug and air filter at this point?

the backfiring you speak of is probability your pilot screw on the bottom of the carb, mine done the same thing, it also backfired on decelaration, like going down a hill or something,,you see this pilot screw is your air/fuel adjustment, you're to rich, you'll need to back this screw out 1/4 a turn, counter clockwise, try this if this is not enough do it again, maybe even a third time but no more. it's really hard to get too, i loosen the clamps that hold the carb and spun the carb so i could get to the screw, make a mark at your starting point,so you know how much to turn it;good luck......regular maintenance and you're good to go,, if it set for a time without being run much might want to take it easy on it for a while...spray your brake cables and your 4-wheel drive cables and such with some wd-40 or something.. hope this helps... wayout, out, " life's good " ...........ps. i read your thread again, your problem might be in your choke cable, check it and make sure it's working ok,it might be stuck or out of adjustment;; also you may need to drain the carb bowl,it could be full of junk if it set for awhile without been runed, either one or both would explain your problems..out
