Default Help With An 05' KingQuad

I've got an 05' KQ with 800 miles on it. It has the HMF slip-on it. Here recently I have been having some trouble with it starting and running. Do I need to get it re-mapped or whatever it is called? I was looking at the power commanders but you get so many mixed reviews about them. I just want to fix the miss and get it back running like it was the day I bought it. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I found the stock number for the UNI filter but I can't seem anywhere to purchase it. Not even on ebay. I have 27" Kenda Executioners and 12" Vortex SuperGrip Rims on my KG. If someone can tell me how to post pics I will show you guys. I am very happy with the machine for the most part, I just need to work this bug out. Thanks Guys!

Go to your local dealership for the filter, because the filter is a MUST. As-in, I would stop riding until you get one "must." But yes, you need either a Powercommander or Dobeck TFI to balance out the mixture. It would also help to remove the airbox snorkel in the back of the breather box, which really seems to serve no purpose and just pops out with a little tug.

I am going to purchase a power comander tonight, but how do I get the correct map installed in it? and does it make a noticeable difference? I am also going to order the UNI filter as soon as I can find it online. Where is this airbox snorkel I need to remove? I will pull it out when I can figure out exactly what you are talking about. Thanks!

LKGRenegade22,
Welcome to the forum. The Power Commander (PC) alone is not going to be very much improvement but since you are on the right track with the pipe and air filter you will see some difference. You will need to download the Power Commander software to your computer when you get your Power commander or you can go to the PC web site and download it. I would not suggest using the map that PC has on there site for the HMF pipe since it has been proven to probuce less power than the stock map. This was a screw up on PC's part.
To get the most out of your setup you will need to get the PC set-up on a dyno machine. I had this done a few weeks ago and it made a hudge difference in my King. I gained about 22% more horse power over the HMR map that it on the PC web site. My map is set-up for my twin-air filter w/ snorkle removed and Yoshimura pipe.
To remove the factory snorkle:
1) Remove the seat.
2) Remove the two clips that hold the cover over the air filter.
3) Slide the cover back to remove it.
4) Remove the wing-nut that hilds the stock air filter in place.
5) Remove the stock air filter. (if you have your Uni, just throught the piece of junk stock filter in the trash, since that is where they belong)
6) Put your hand in the air-box,like your trying to reach back under the seat. The snorkle ia a rubber tube that is oval in shape and runs from about the middle of the back wall of the box bown to almost the bottom of the air-box.
7) grab the snorkle (the only ruber item in the box) and pull it to the front of the ari-box. It should just pull out and can be put back if you ever decide to do so. (I have never heard of anyone wanting to put it back.)
8) Put filter back, replace wing-bolt, replace cover, and replace seat. That is the process.

As to the air filter. I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. That is why I chose the Twin Air over the Uni. It has a less restrictive cage and I have been told that it holds up to cleaning better. You can get the Twin Air filter direct from Twin Air or save $10 and order it from Rocky Mountian ATV. I got mine from Twin Air direct and had it in two business days.

I would also suggest that you invest in a EPI clutch kit. It was the best bang for the buck mod that I have done to my King to this point and I have done a few. If you don't want to do the EPI kit, I would suggest to at least do the Dalton clutch kit. You can run a search on clutch kits and see some more info about the differences in the two.
Sorry to have been windy with the reply.

You might want to check out http://atv.dnsalias.com/
It is the Nyroc site and the best atv forum on the web. Look in the King Quad section for a lot of super nice guys and a lot of information.

Default Help With An 05' KingQuad

DavAsh, Thanks for the help and the welcome. I have been into corvettes and harleys for some time and have just been coverted over the ATV world. It's a ton of fun! I am going to order the Twin Air setup tonight. I still have not ordered the power commander because I am unsure of where I could take my ATV to be put on a dyno and who could tune it. I know that no one anywhere close to me has those capabilities. I'm assuming somewhere in Raleigh does but I do not know for sure. I know plenty of places I can carry my car to be dynoed as I have done that numerous times but I am clueless about the ATV. I just want it to run like it did when I first got it. It's a total pain to start up now which should not happen, especially with EFI. I'm going to perform all the maintanance to the machine and even change the spark plug Thursday when I am off again and change the filter for the ride this weekend. Any other information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I'm in no way bashing other ATV's but in I have friends that have the BRP 800 Outlander and The Brute Force 750 and I still prefer the Kingquad over them so I want to perfect my ride.

I also forgot to ask. What is the purpose of the clutch upgrade kits? Does the stock clutch fail under normal use?

The stock clutch is fine, but some feel it is geared a bit high. I am having a Dalton installed as we speak, which I put on because I purchased some heavier 26" mud tires and I just wanted some more snap and hard acceleration overall. From what I've read, it will be the ticket, but I haven't seen my machine for two weeks now so I can't tell you personally how it does. The EPI is $80 more, but has the internal "wet" springs that raise the RPM engagement a bit so that the acceleration is just that much better.

Question on the clutch kit... did you guys put an entire clutch kit in or did you just change the springs? I am planning on putting one in my KQ after I put 26" Maxxis Bighorns on it.

Well, all the Dalton "kit" consists of is a spring and some shims. Would have probably been simple to install myself, but I figured it would have been done quicker(so funny considering my machine will be a week overdue tomorrow) and more efficiently through a dealership. The EPI has these and then "wet" springs that go in the internal clutch. You wouldn't really want to buy parts of it and put different ones in at a time, though it can be done, because you won't get the same performance everyone else gets. I haven't heard of anyone else putting just parts in at this point, but I'm sure you could.

So about how much does the clutch kit run? If it is a good modification I will purchase that also.
