4 Stroke Engine Oil
#11
Reconranger sure knows his oil stuff! I've been using Mobile 1 MX4T in all my quads with no problem. Then when I got my new 450R I took Reconrangers advice and ran the best oil out there. Maxima Ultra. It's about $13 a bottle but it's worth it to know this high reving race engine is getting the best protection money can buy.
Take his advice and run the good stuff.

You may find Ultra a little cheaper here: http://www.onoffroad.com/Merchant2/m...CLE-LUBRICANTS

I took you advice there too. Maxima MTL. One question , I'm using the 75 wt now, should I be using the heavier type? Or do You think I'm ok whith what I got? Thanks again. You must of been a Peterolum Engineer some where along the line. Keep up the good info!

Just go up to the local motorcycle shop and get some motorcycle oil, vavoline makes oil specially designed for atv use and its only like $5/quart.

75 weight MTL (cSt at 100 degrees of 5.54) has the same viscosity (when it is hot!) as a light 20 weight engine oil. 80 weight (cSt of 8.56) is like a heavy 20 weight, and 85 weight (cSt of 10.66) is like a mid 30 weight engine oil.
So, 75 is very light, and I would only run it in very cold weather, or if I were a racer who wanted the least resistance from my transmission (but maybe at the expense of some premature wear????). Personally, my pick would be 85 weight for summer, and 80 for winter in most parts of the country.
Honda's own red HP Trans Oil is multigrade 80W/85W, so I would stay in that range somewhere.
