lt 250r trouble starting HELP!!!!!!!!
#1
Ok, little story here. Rebuilt the '87 lt 250r a while back, ran great after the complete rebuild. Until just a little while ago. Usually have to put a new plug in it when it's cold to get it to fire. When started, runs great jetting is spot on. FASSSST! If I shut it off for more than about 30 min. its back to a new plug before it will start again. I refuse to blame jetting, because nothing changed in that department when this problem arose. Also, the thing will sit there and idle smooth as silk for just as long as you'll let it. I was wondering about an ignition problem, weak but not completely faulty stator or coil?? Has anyone else ever run across this?? Need to aleiviate this problem to sell it if anyone is interested, bought the 06 ltz400. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

I also wondered about the float level, and when I replaced the needle and seat, shortly before the rebuild, I set the float at the lowest setting in the range to minimize the possibility of sloshing and puddles on the garage floor when the fuel is left on. I know the problem sounds like jetting, but hate to mess with it because it idles better than any other two stroke I have ever owned as well as runs out just awesome. When I remove the plug it is just slightly wet, not soaked just as any two stroke plug should, especially after idling. I almost must blame heat related variances within the electronic components.
Thanks for your help

b8es, it is just so odd that a new plug will allow it to start and I can put the old one back in, once I know the engine is cleared out and it will only run for a few seconds.

my 87 lt500 had this same problem. i finally replaced the carb. w/a new one, as the stockers are just all screwed up internally. this fixed the problem. havent replaced the spark plug yet. in fact, since it was so good, i even bought one of those irridium plugs for it this year.

Some one has already put a 36mm mikuni on this, So it may still have some age on it but, is not as old as the rest of the machine. I just have difficultyblaming the carb for this problem.
