Default 89 LT4WD starting problem

I am new to ATVs but I just bought an 89 LT4WD. It runs good, the front brakes are shot (parts are ordered) but I have a problem with the starter. When I hold in the starter button it sounds like the starter motor runs free for about 20-40 seconds before it slows down and engages the motor and then it will start. It does this every time you start it. Does this sound like a starter clutch problem? and how hard is it to replace? Any help is appreciated.

It sounds more like the valves need to be adjusted, theyare really fussy. I had the same problems that was killing my compression, hence why the starter seemed like it wasn't engaging, there wasn't any resistance to make it sound like i was "working" to start the engine. If you do try to adjust the valves, you better have time to do it and be a contorsionist to do it

Thanks for the response. Now that i have spent some more time with it, I really think its the clutch. I pulled the starter out and checked it- it runs fine. (it doesn't have a bendix like a car starter) If i use the pull starter after I try the electric start, the starter stays engaged and it makes it really difficult to pull (the starter doesn't want to release) . After a few pulls the starter motor will finally release, the pull gets really easy and the motor will fire right up (i use the compression release every time). As long as the starter motor stays disengaged the motor fires up on the first or second pull everytime. The only thing I can think is that the starter clutch is either misadjusted, worn out, or mis-installed.
I got a service manual with the quad when i bought it but it looks like I have to tear half the motor down to get to the starter clutch. Has anyone dealt with MC Mart for parts?

Yeah, what your saying does make sense. I haven't used that company, but I have bought alot of parts from bikebandit.com ( I have an '87 lt4wd & the '87 lt300e which is basically the same just 2wd) and it's alway been right & fast. I'd just try the starter itself, easier and then go from there.
