Default Need advice on replacing LT125 engine

I was given a Kawasaki Mojave 250 that was retro-fitted with a Suzuki LT125 engine. I cleaned the carb and installed a choke assembly that was missing and got it running.
The chain ended up coming off after a while and got bound between the drive sprocket and the frame. The engine runs fine, but something happened internal to the tranny I believe.
When it's in neutral and running, the drive sprocket tries to sporadically move (clicks forward). When I'm in any gear, the maching will move, but skips, like the chain is slipping on a sprocket but that's not the problem. It also does this in reverse. The drive sprocket was welded on by the previous owner.
Any ideas?? If its something that would be quite costly to repair, I'm looking at the option of picking up another engine and putting it in. Something automatic and can be 125 up to 250.
I've read a few earlier posts regarding the difference between the LT125 and LT185 and saw some felt the only real difference is the size of the bore. I'm wondering if a Lt185 engine would bolt right into the mounts that have been welded up for the 125 thats currently in it?? I believe the 125 engine to be around 1986.

Looking for ideas,

Lasko

the lt185 has different internals from the lt125. like bigger gears and such, along with the bore being bigger. i'm not sure baout the mounts, but i think they were different.

there was a problem with the lt125's. the main shaft would break. that could be what happen to yours. and used shafts are hard to find in good condition. also the reverse gear would get worn out, from improperly engaging it.

theres all kinds of engines you could install, if your handy.

If the main shaft failed, would I still be able to put it into gear and drive it around. I can shift into all of the gears, including reverse, but it "slips" or acts like its only partially engaged into which ever gear I'm in. One guy suggested I may have bent a shifting fork and it may be getting partially engaged. Sound right??

Thanks for the info on the Lt185. A guy has a 185 engine for sale. It comes with CDI, wiring harness, carb, ready to run condition. What's a fair price for something like that?

I have an '83 LT125 that did the same thing. All I had to do was take the cover off behind the left tire and tighten the chain tensioner. It is easiest to do with the tire off and the rear plastic off.

you may be lucky, and the reason it slips is the front sprocket is worn out. if its not, could be dogs on gears. does it slip in every gear?

a LT is a quad. ALT is the trike
