Not sure where the manual is, can anyone tell me what grade oils to use in the engine and front differential for a '99 KingQuad? Should I use Suzuki brand, or another? Should I try synthetic in either end, or stick with conventional? This should generate some discussion...

I think you already know the answers but I'd like to respond anyway. The manual says, to use 10W40 SAE oil, for the engine. But it also says, 20 weight, 30 weight, etc. for other conditions. The front differential requires another type oil with much different properties. Now, I'm not looking in the book for information but I would guess it's a 90 weight and needs changing only every 1000 miles or so. How am I doing?
Let me ask you one more question. What's the difference between a 10W20 and 10W50 oil? Which would you use in cold weather and why?

I don't ride in the cold but i think its the thicker oil your suppose to use. I forget. I'm probably wrong. The front differential fluid is-SAE90 hypoid oil. If below 32 degrees use SAE80.

The front and rear lubes for the KQ are totally differant.

In the front diff, your best bet is a synthetic hypoid gear lube of 80-90w.

The rear tranny on the King is lubed by the engine oil.In summer when its extremly hot,I use 20w-50 [spectra motorcycle].When the weather turns colder, the tranny and engine will take forever to warm up with the thicker viscosity oils,so I change it DOWN to 10w-30 oil,
Bill

Chuck, I guess you're doing fine. Like I said, I don't have the manual. I'm not sure the exact explanation behind the ratings of oils, but it was briefly explained to me as 10W40 behaves like a 10 weight oil in cold weather, and as it heats up, it retains the properties of a 40 weight oil. You would use the thinner one in colder weather, makes less work for the engine to distribute it. Thanks for the feedback.

I HAVE A 99 KING QUAD AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS WITH CONDENSATION FORMING IN THE OIL DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS HAPPENS AS A RESULT OF SHORT RIDES AND THE OIL NOT GETTING HOT. DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE A SMIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THIER ATV. THANKS, STEVE

I have a 97 King Quad.I use Suzuki brand 10-40 for the engine.I buy it by the case $22 and change it along with the oil filter every 300 miles.I use 80-90 hypoid gear oil for the front and change it every 600 like the book says.I found that oil filters at the dealer cost about $8.I get mine from J.C.Whitney for about $2.They dont come with the O rings.I replace them every 6 months and those are a dealer item....BOB

I have a '99 KQ, Bob. My manual says, check the front diff. oil every 1200 miles or six months. Replace oil every two years. I don't think your '97 is any different, do you? I'm glad you mentioned the oil filters and J.C. Whitney. I'd never have thought of looking there. Thanks.

No i don't think my 97 is any different than your 99.Yes it does say to change the front diff every 1200 and the engine oil every 600.But i choose to split those in half.I don't know if i'm doing the quad any favors by doing that, but i don't see how it could hurt anything.I do most of my rideing in the summer and the miles i put on it are hard ones at times....BOB
