Advantages of the 230:
The LT230 has a dry weight of 309 while the z250 weighs in at 366, so there is a 57lb weight advantage to the 230. The 230 has a chain drive versus a shaft drive for the z250. Pretty large advantage for the 230 here (power wise, not maintenance wise). The 230 also has a manual clutch versus an auto clutch on the z250. Not sure about the cam profile of the z250, but I would assume it's similar to the electric start 230E in which case the 230sport has a little wilder cam.
Advantages of the z250:
Obviously, the displacement is the biggest advantage. The z250 has 17cc's more than the stock 230 (246 versus 229). The z250 also has a carb that is 1 mm larger than the 230.
Both are 4 strokes. Sorry DVXDUDE.
I'd have to say that a "good running" stock 230 would beat the z250 in a drag race and handle a little better also due to the weight. But keep in mind that a "good running" stock 230 is also pretty hard to find these days. Most 230's today would probably loose this race simply because they're so abused.

First off, they're both "Zuki's". We're talking about the Suzuki LTZ250 and the Suzuki LT230S.
As far as the handling, the 230 is nearly 20% lighter than the LTZ. Second, the 230 has more front suspension (6.7 inches versus 6.1). Third, the 230 has a lot more rear suspension (7.9 inches versus 6.1). Fourth, have you seen the suspension geometry of the LTZ? The rear is more like a utiltiy quad than a sport quad. Check out this pick of the shock angle. It's nearly straight up and down!

Don't get me wrong, the LTZ is a great little beginners bike. It will be way more maintenance free than the 230, and probably a lot more fun for most kids who don't want to put up with the hassle of kick starting a four stroke and working on a 20 year old quad just to keep it going. But the 230 would handle better hands down. Again though, I'm talking a stock 230 in good shape. Not a ragged out junker with worn out bearings, tie rods, and brakes.
