Default Eiger gear shifter problem

I bought a use 2002 Eiger a couple of weeks ago and the has been play in the shifter since I got it. I had to wiggle the shifter to get it to go into Rev. and most of time to get it out of low or high. Now it will not go in to Rev. Neut. its all the way down where Rev. is.
I ordered a shop manual last week but they said it could take 3 weeks. I have not pull off the side cover and look to see if it would be a simple adjustment. My brother said it was adjustable.
Is it a simple adjustmemt? If so any guidance?

Default Eiger gear shifter problem

I was able to pull off the side cover and gas tank cover today. I did see a adjustment to the cable and 'played' with it until it seem to work best.
The problem I seem to have was that if I adjusted it at low speed then it would not (or just ) go into Rev. and if I adjusted it for Rev. then it would not go into Low. So I adjusted it between both. It will not go all the way in the stops on the gearshift lever assy. for Low or Rev. but this was the best I could do. I did not get time to drive it and see how it is yet.

After I returned home tonight I found my Service Manual at my door step! So I looked it up and I did adjust the cabel play. My gearshift lever assembley has some 'play' and maybe to much for the Low and Rev. to rest in it stops. It don't seem like much wear but the service manual says if any wear is found then replace the gearshift lever assy.

On the gearshift arm (going into eng.) it the service manual gives the gearshift arm setting angle. It states the Neutral is 0 deg. Where is 0 deg.?

o degrees, is a straight line on a piece of paper if you know what i mean, a horizontal line, look at your pc screen,at the bottem, then draw a line from corner to corner, thats a 45 degree angle, that flat line at the bottom is 0 degrees, then it goes to 1 degree,5,10,20,35,45,get the picture;i hope this helps,wayout,out...........................

Default Eiger gear shifter problem

Wayout, thanks for the reply. That is what I would think 0 deg. is also. But after compairing it to my 2005 they must mean Neutral is the starting point- 0 deg. in relation to the other gears. I say this because both are set at 40-45 deg. at Neutral and I have no problems with the 2005. But I found my problem!

After compairing my 2002 with my 2005 I noticed the 2002 did not move back in to Rev far enough. I disconnected the gearshift cable at both ends and after some trial and error I came up with a bad cable. The cable would not extend far enough even with all of the adjustments. It did feel like it was binding when the cable was at the end of the extension. So I felt I had nothing to loose and pried it out futher out. It is now working as it should. The gearshift lever will now go in all stops and it shifts as it should. I think I'll wait and see if it causes me more trouble before ordering a new cable. But I sure it will be coming.

Scott.

Just make sure to never use more force than your finger tips to shift it. If it isn't shifting easy then try either rocking the machine, releasing/depressing the rear brake, or throttleing it a little to make it shift easy.

Default Eiger gear shifter problem

I need help!!! I bought the cabel and it is a different size. The 2002 model cable was superceed with a different part number. Has anyone here changed a 2002 Eiger Shift lever cable? Did they have to change both brackets that attach the cable to the frame and eng? I found one web page that states you also have to order these parts for the cable to work. I call them and they said you have to change the brackets. You can not get the old cable.

How do you adjust the cable. I have an 02 eiger I don't see any thing that is adjustable on the cable.

I just bought a 2004 Eiger not even two weeks ago and I think that I am having this same issue. The shifter will not go into the gears sometimes unless you either rock it back and forth or move it up or back a few inches. The additional problem, however, is that sometimes it will just move up and down freely, as if it's broken, and will seem to "catch" all of a sudden and jerk into gear and forward. You can hear a rattling sound when it does this. It sounds kind of like something broken or loose. From what I am reading here, it sounds like this could be the problem. My question is, it will be a few weeks before I can take it and have it fixed. My 13 and 11 year old daughters want to continue riding it in the meantime. If we just continue to rock it to get it to shift and keep riding it until we get it fixed, will it be ok, or will it cause any kind of major damage to it?

Depending if it is a manual or Auto, it has one or two gear levers. Hand lever on tank is what previous posters are on about, and on manual, foot lever needs to be in neutral before you can change into reverse on the hand lever. On the auto, you can just shove hand lever into required gear then press throttle to go. All quads need rocking to get a gear with engine stopped but should be OK with it running. Check the lever(s) on the side of the alternator case are tight on the splines, and there is a big hexagonal thing sticking out of the back of the case near where the wires come out, check this is tight.

"sometimes it will just move up and down freely, as if it's broken, and will seem to "catch" all of a sudden and jerk into gear and forward. You can hear a rattling sound when it does this."

This does not sound good, but the engine should be going too slow at idle, for any "jerking forwards" when you go from neutral into gear. Come to a stop before going from high to low.
