300 King Quad Blowing smoke
My 1999 300 King Quad is blowing a tremendous amount of smoke. It appears that I fried the rings or maybe even worse. There is no engine knock. Would a new piston and rings cure this? Or would I need a complete engine rebuild. Does anybody know what type of money this would bring?

I would start with a compression test. Test it dry and then put about an oz of Marvel Mystery Oil in the sparkplug hole and test it again and compare. Compare it to the specs for the engine too - probaly someplace between 70-110psi would be ok. If the compression is there, then the problem is probably not as serious. Might be just a case of bad valve seals or such.
Problem: Exhaust smoke dirty or heavy
Condition Remedy
1. Oil (in the engine) overfilled - contaminated 1. Drain excess oil - replace oil
2. Piston rings - cylinder worn 2. Replace - service rings - cylinder
3. Valve guides worn 3. Replace guides
4. Cylinder wall scored - scuffed 4. Replace - service cylinder
5. Valve stems worn 5. Replace valves
6. Stem seals defective 6. Replace seals
