The ignition timing is not adjustable, so no easy way to check it. The valve timing is checked by looking at the cam sproket when the piston is at TDC. The sproket should have marks that are parallel to the head I think. Either that or it will have a dot that should be straight up. Either way, it will be pretty obvious once you take a look at it. There are other guys here that can tell you exactly.
You can look at the spark plug to determine if the timing is correct. The ground strap should have a color difference in the middle of the curve. It should be right in the middle. If not, the ignition timing is off.
