"I found out that the exhaust cam did slip the gear on the cam when it locked up. That was what bent the valves. I am an experienced mechanic on automobiles but i build my own 4wheelers as well."
The above statement is from another forum about a Z-400 engine that suddenly locked up. From the sounds of it, the Z's engines are interference engines. So, when the the timing chain breaks or jumps teeth, yes the piston will hit the valves when it gets out of timing.

Ok, do We know if this z400 engine was modified internally with Hi-comp piston or something? Was his head decked?
Hello all! Hey so I just bought this LTZ400 and it runs great shifts great, oil looked ok etc. But I got it home, detailed the heck out of it and drained the oil. Thats when I found THIS stuck to the drain plug magnet. Nothing else in the filter, or any of the other oil. And yes I strained the oil to check. My question is, can anyone guess what this might be from? I noticed one of the pieces has the almost "splined" kind if pattern on it like what is typically found on the non drive faces of tranny gear teeth. I'm thinking someone missed a shift real bad or something and it chipped the edge of a tooth but its hard not to stress about it!😲😬
