Backfire is usually caused by it running lean. When you rev it up and then let off the gas, it pops, because the idle and low end throttle is lean. Engines run lean in the winter.
To tighten the chain put the piston at TDC. Loosen the bolt on the top of the chain tensioner one good turn. The adjuster should push itself out and tighten the chain by itself. Now tighten the lock bolt and you're done. The books says if the chain still makes noise, the adjuster is sticking and you have to take it out and clean it. The piston has to be at TDC or it won't work (I know from experience, lol). Use a screwdriver in the sparkplug hole to find TDC.

how do you fix it from running lean</end quote></div>
1) Adjust the mixture screw to richen the idle.
2) Move the needle clip down on the needle to richen the mid throttle
3) Install a bigger main jet or drill the stock one bigger to richen the top end.
OR you can do things like: putting the airbox lid back on, going from a KN filter to a foam filter, or remove your exhaust baffle or the bolts on the bottom of the stock 230 exhaust.
all those things richen it.

on the bottom of the exhaust, er, muffler. They are drain bolts I guess. Less back pressure should make it richer... It does on mine and every other engine I've seen. Check your spark plug before and after.
Yes, it will make it louder, some... There are 2 bolts,,, the one closest to the engine does the most. It is BEFORE the spark arrestor, so sparks may shoot out sometimes if your carb is way out of adjumstment. I've actually drilled a few more holes and welded nuts on so I can plug them if I want.... I haven't plugged them yet and have been thinking of drilling a few more.
