Default 1987 lt230s top end valve noise or something?

I get a chatter when I start it up? is this the valves out of adjustment? intake or exhaust valve? I noticed the intake valve adjustment screws are screwed down pretty far.... is this normal? btw I got this from someone who didn't know what they were doing.... I went thru the clutch side of the engine and had to replace a gear..

thanks

.001-.003 for the intake and .003-.005 exhaust. Get the piston at TDC (or err on the side of the piston coming up if you cant keep it exactly at TDC) and then adjust the valves to those specs. Its important the valves have that slack in them to be sure they are closed fully at TDC. Anymore slack than that and you'll start to get noise and you also lose cam duration and lift (which equals power loss in most cases - sometimes a gain though, but not on the 230).

Another thought on your intake valve is: If you run w/o an air filter, the dirt wears the intake valve and seat such that the valve actually tries to pull itself out of the head completely (eventually, if you can keep it running long enough, it will, but that would take an extremely long time and lots of readjusting the valve). What happens as they wear down is the slack in the valves goes away and the valve never fully seats. Making for really hard cold starting and general power loss.

thanks for the great respones. last night i spent 3 hours on it but don't have a feeler gauge and am picking that up today. Do i really need to take off the magneto cover ? or can I just take the spark plug out and see if the pistion is all the way at the top? thanks... oh, another thing, I adjust both at the same time (intake and exhaust) while the pistion is all the way up?

thanks

Just take the spark plug out and use a screwdriver. The piston will probably not want to stay at the top, the magneto will make it roll on over, just get it a little before TDC if ya can. Do both the exhaust and intake at TDC.
