Lt80 Wheel Conversion
#1
First off, @onebigzj, thanks for the sweet deal!
So close, but so far away.....
Got the fronts on without much hassle, had to make one run to work (yes, on Sunday - 24/7 operation) to get supplies (10 x 1.25 tap/die), but other than that, not much hassle. Seems the previous owner of my 80 had already put wheel spacers on, and they were a bee-otch to get the nuts off - ended up splitting all 6 (3 on each side) and running a die down the threads. So fronts are on and looking good, handling seems good, steering is MUCH faster.
The rears I ended up taking the spacers off - with them on, the rear was a full 4.5 inches wider than the front - lost the spacers, down to 2.5 inches wider. Got the first side done, looks great, thinking about the test ride. Assembled the other side, and ended up breaking 2 of the 4 carriage bolts that act as the new wheel studs - not a great thing to have happen at 8:20 on a Sunday night - can't risk another trip to work without raising a few eyebrows, or worse yet, getting sucked into a repair! Have to get the new ones tomorrow, and try to finish 'er up. I will make an attempt to post pics when all is said and done.
UPDATE:
Diamond J seems to think that Grade 2 hardware is perfectly acceptable for wheel studs! WTF??? My KIDS ride this quad...f'n a-holes... I have a box of 50 Grade 8 Carriage Bolts coming on comp from my supplier, so it looks like another 3 - 4 days....
