Just have not had time to crank her up since turkey season. Tried tonight and finally got it started but would not idle and kept shutting off. it ran fine in May but won't stay cranked now. it sat in the garage thru the summer. battery was fine. I siphoned out the old gas and plan to put fresh gas in the tank, the oil was just changed in april. If fresh gas does not fix the problem, what is the next step, spark plug, air filter, ???
Thx!

Sounds like classic symptoms of old bad gas. If you are going to let it sit for months without riding it, put some fuel stabilizer in there. If replacing the gas doesn't work, you might have to clean the carb as well. The old gas might have gummed it up.

Remember that gas starts to break down after only 60 days.

I put fresh gas in and cranks up but only runs for a second or two and cuts off. Have to push the throttle to keep it running above idle. My next step is to check the spark plug, and the air filter, anything else that a weekend mechanic can check?
Thx!

Take the carb off an then take the bowl off an clean an blow out the slow jet and its passageway. That oughta fix ya right up if its running alright at all other speeds. The jet or passageway has probably got gummed up with varnish.

By the way, stabil does have a "use by date" on the bottle.

how easy is it to get the carb out and clean the jets without disassembling the+40 parts? Just asking before I pay someone else to repair/rebuild/clean it!
Thx

I dunno, I have one (2002) but never had to do anything to it yet. I have took the carb off of my older recon an it was time consuming, but not really that hard.
