HELP!blown lt250r..rebuild or dump?
#1
ive had my lt250r for about a year. piston broke in the cylinder and broken pieces all in transmission. not sure if i should rebuild, look for new/used engine or sell the bike. brand new plastics and seat.

I would try looking on craigslist for a used lt250 then use it for parts then do a rebuild... It all depends on how much time your looking to spend on it.. It also depends on how much cash your willing to fork out for the quad... Good luck

lt250r is a 2stroke wich means that under the crank is just part of the combustion chamber not the transmission. so if you didnt mess up the cylinder just get the pieces out of the crank case and put in a new piston. should be an easy fix unless you broke the cases. look in the crank case with a light and see if its broke under the crank.

You should not give advice if you have no idea what you are talking about, which it sounds like you do not. This is NOT an easy fix!
If it were me, and I know that there are pieces in the bottom end, I would split the cases because that is the only way to get any and all pieces out. It is not a job for a novice.
I hate to say it, but it sounds like you should consider finding a motor, or parting out what is left of the bike and put those funds towards something else.

I agree with Lucasislight as far as splitting the cases being for expierienced mechanics but that's about it.
You should be able to get 99.9% of the broke pieces out of the bottom end. Like saywheresarny mentioned, pieces can get wedged under the crank and crack the cases.
I consider all that and the top end easy.
Head nuts (6), cylinder nuts (4), remove exhaust, remove carb and your in.
You can get another motor that will need as much as this one.
Fix this one and you know what you have.
Piston 150+ or so
bore 40 or so
Gaskets 20 or so.
A cpl hundred bucks in parts.
