Winch rope-cable or synthetic?
#1
Hello,
I posted a topic on if I could fit a Warn RT 25 on my Ozark but what's the sense if an XT or RT 15 can do the job well? So I'm wondering if I should buy the Warn RT15 or the Warn XT15?
The Warn RT15 stands for Warn Rough Terrain 1,500lb.
The Warn XT15 stands for Warn Extreme Terrain 1,500lb.
The XT15 comes with a synthetic rope that's 40 feet long. It also comes with a synthetic Hawse style fairlead.
The RT15 come with a 50 foot long steel cable with a Hawse style fairlead.
I am planning to plow with it and I will hook the plow to the winch. Using the Hawse fairlead, the cable or rope will rub against the fairlead. Which winch do you think I should buy for this use? The steel cable will fray sooner or later from the rubbing but so will the synthetic rope.
If roller fairleads are able to be monuted to the Ozark 250, please let me know, this will eliminate half the problem!
Has anyone used a sythetic rope and a steel cable? Which one do you like better?
If you understood this whole post, I give you credit. If you need me to explain anything to you, let me know!
Thanks!

I have used both steel cable and synthetic rope. I prefer synthetic rope. For one, it holds up better for plowing. It is typically stronger than cable and safer as it doesn't store energy. I stuffed 75ft of it on my warn 2500, as opposed to the 50 ft cable. Longer is better! As for fairleads, I am running a roller fairlead on mine. I have read that you should only use hawse fairleads for synthetic, but then you see mfr's selling winches with synthetic rope with a roller fairlead, so I don't know the answer. I can see where the rope could get pinched in the roller at the right angle, but I haven't had any problems yet. I guess if I do I will put on a hawse fairlead. As long as they are free of burrs, then you should be fine with either fairlead. Just make sure it has a protective cover the first couple of feet or so.

I work and play for Jeep and will tell you that there realy is no negitive to sythetic rope. I have a XT2500 that I just put on my new Grizz and it looks and works great just like its bigger counterparts!

Suzi Ozark good call.. I think the rope is the answer right after Christmas I will order mine. I use my quad all Hunting season we winch feeders and things all the time. We pull ladders apart with it. I hate the cable I will have the synthetic rope shortly.. Good luck with it.

synthetic is amazing, keep it works away from abrasion.
